Looper

JOY REVIEW

Loopers is one of those conventions that Hollywood loves, which is time travel, but this one is time travel in the future.  So people who are troublesome in the future are now sent back from time travel 30 years back and assassinated, and then the bodies are disposed of, so essentially, they don’t exist. Now, you may be scratching your head and saying, yeah, but if they did at one point exist, and then they don’t exist, how could they exist in the future 30 years from then? Good point. No answer to that question. This one stars Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt apparently spent hours in the makeup chair to get a nose just like Bruce’s because they’re supposed to be the same guy. The idea is that Joseph is a looper who shoots people as they come back, and is rewarded for it handsomely, but somebody is trying to close the loop. I mean, if I tell you the plot about this, it’s just going to give you a headache because there are so many logical inconsistencies, and if you think there are inconsistencies in the beginning of the movie, wait until the end of the movie.  We also have Paul Dano in it who turns out to be a looper who can’t quite kill himself. I know you’re asking yourself, what? And then it’s not that Joseph can’t kill Bruce, it’s just that Bruce outsmarts him because — and there is a reason here, but I’m not going to tell you because why would you go to the movie otherwise. This movie will probably make some serious money because it’s got big name stars in it, and it is sort of action oriented, but there are really problems that you can drive not only a truck but probably most of the trucks in New Jersey through. As I said, you’re probably going to figure out the last plot device turn, but then there is such a logical inconsistency that again, maybe New Jersey and Connecticut trucks can go through it. The beginning is very slow, the middle is fairly interesting, and the end logically doesn’t work, but the middle is fun enough that you will probably enjoy yourself and it will probably make some money. Three stars.
