Lola Versus stars Greta Gerwig, Joel Kinnaman, Hamish Linklater, Bill Pullman, and Debra Winger. The story is about a woman who is crazy about her guy, he asks her to get married, and then calls off the wedding. Then she wanders around, having meaningless sex with guys, and tries to decide whether or not to have a relationship with her best friend, who is a male. Her other best friend, who is wonderfully played by Zoe Lister-Jones, is funny and silly and really the best thing in the movie. Bill Pullman and Debra Winger as parents are the other best thing in the movie, because they’re parents you desperately want to have. They’re so easy in their own skin, they’re so charming, they both look great together; they’re what everybody wants as parents. The problem is that Greta has a particular rhythm to her acting, which we’ve seen in other things including Arthur and Damsels in Distress, and it either works or it doesn’t work. In this movie, she’s completely unlikable. I mean, you feel sorry for her, but you still don’t like her, and you certainly understand why her boyfriend broke up with her, and it’s really hard to spend an hour and a half with somebody that you don’t like. That’s really what happens in Lola Versus. So, it’s funny and clever, and probably would have worked with a more appealing actress in the lead role. Two stars.
