Life During Wartime
Life During Wartime – Movie Review
Friends, family, and lovers struggle to find love, forgiveness, and meaning in a war-torn world riddled with comedy and pathos.
Life During Wartime is the latest film by Todd Solondz. It has a terrific cast including Shirley Henderson, Ciaran Hinds, Allison Janney, Michael Lerner, Charlotte Rampling, Paul Rubeuns, yeah that’s Pee-Wee Herman, Ally Sheedy, and Rene Taylor. So it’s got a great cast, but it’s a mess. It’s rude, it’s mean-spirited. It’s just plain nasty. The idea is that a woman is out on a blind date with a man. It turns out that her husband, whom she had told the child had died, is really in jail for being a pedophile. We don’t know by the end of the film whether he is or not. Allison has a 13-year-old son who’s practicing for his Bar Mitzvah and also a 21-year-old. There’s probably a story in here someplace. This is a great cast who are badly directed and it’s really a mess. It doesn’t make any sense, it doesn’t go anywhere, and it’s obscene and unpleasant for no particular value. Zero stars.
