Kumare is actually a terrific documentary about a guy who decides that he’s going to become a guru, but he doesn’t do it because he thinks he’s gotten a sign from God, he’s doing it as a research project to see whether or not pretending to be a guru can have the same effect on people as being a real guru does. It helps that his heritage is Indian and he adopts his grandmother’s phraseology. The problem is with his hypothesis, which is that all religion is charlatanism. He’s such a charismatic guy and he seems so empathetic that you kind of like him, and so it would have been better if he’d been kind of a snot, and then you could see that he’s really a fraud, because you really like him and you can see why other people like him and they get into it. It may not be religion, it may just be his personal charisma, so as a research project I think it failed. As a documentary, it’s really fun. Four stars.
