Political Intrigue

It stars Chris Pine, doing what Chris Pine does, which is doing the backstory of famous characters. He has made a career of his revival of the character of Capt. James T Kirk as a young man, and now he is doing Jack Ryan as a young man from the Tom Clancy novels. Those penetrating blue eyes are pretty cute, but he seems a little young, we see him as a student at the London School of Economics as he watches the towers fall on 911, then we see him as a Marine because of his patriotism and then we see him recruited, or “shadow recruited” if you will, by Kevin Costner. Kevin Costner is wonderful in this, I always thought he was a little “flakey” looking, but he looks great losing his hair and getting gray. There is plot to bring down the American Economy, by Russians buying up the dollar, while coordinating a terrorist attack on Wall Street, with Kenneth Branaugh playing the evil Russian and seving as the films director as well. The film is well directed and “glittery”, with chase scenes being a lot of fun, with the second half of the film working better than the first. Branaugh does a good job making you care about the characters, while not allowing the actions scenes to get carried away. It is “popcorn-fun” and I’m giving 3.5 stars.
