It Might Get Loud
It Might Get Loud – Movie Review
Rarely can a film penetrate the glamorous surface of rock legends. It Might Get Loud tells the personal stories, in their own words, of three generations of electric guitar virtuosos.
“It Might Get Loud” is the perfect movie IF you are really in love with electric guitars. For the rest of us, it’s sort of interesting but very noisy. It deals with Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, Jack White from White Stripes, and the Edge from U-2. So we’ve got three really good guitar players. But let me explain to you what my problem with it is. At one point, Jack White who is quite charming, very different from Jack Black incidentally, plays a song from a blues man in the 40’s. And it’s just a voice saying don’t let them smile in your face. And the only accompaniment is his hands clapping somewhat off the beat. And Jack White says that’s the sound I’m trying to replicate. And you understand the magic of the original song. And it’s pure, it’s emotional, it’s musical, it’s universal. But I’m not sure all the noise that now electric guitars make in the modern era is exactly the same thing. In fact, to my ear it’s the antithesis. But if you love electric guitars, you’ll love this. I mean and who doesn’t want to get in touch with Led Zeppelin, U2, and the White Stripes. If those names send chills up and down your spine then you probably want to go see this movie. If not maybe wait until it comes out on DVD. One star.
