In The Land of Blood and Honey
This is Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut and it looks at the bloody war in the Balkans. It’s really two separate movies, one is looking at the genocide in Serbo-Croatia, and the other looks at a love story of two people who are on the wrong side of the politics. I think the love story works significantly better than the other, but it’s a really assured debut; it probably would’ve worked better to have slightly less focus on one or the other. So I think what you’re looking for in a movie is something that’s sort of linear as opposed to two separate movies that somewhat overlap. However, having said that, I think it’s not an easy movie to watch. The love story, as I said, works much better than the politics, but it’s certainly an assured debut. Three stars.
