Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, and Rebel
Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, and Rebel – Movie Review
A look at the battles Hugh Hefner fought over the years against the U.S. government, the religious right, and militant feminists.
Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, and Rebel is a documentary obviously about Hugh Hefner. I think you will see a different side of him then you’ve seen before. The first half of the documentary is terrific and the end is terrific. The middle is a little soggy. It is repetitive and redundant and slows the whole thing down. Some judicious editing could have helped. The talking heads in this run everywhere from Gene Simmons to Dr. Ruth to Pat Boone. That in and of itself is interesting. What I really was struck by at the end of this is that they kind of miss the point of Hugh Hefner, was sort of a lonely man, who seems to be more somebody who likes sex intellectually rather than physically and also is a man who really did some serious work about civil rights. So I will give it two and a half stars for subject matter but I think they really did miss the boat.
