Herb & Dorothy
Herb & Dorothy – Movie Review
A look at a couple and their obsession with their modern art collection.
HERB & DOROTHY is a documentary about a couple, he’s a postal working, she’s a librarian, and since the 60’s, they’ve bought modern art at bargain basement prices and now have a collection that numbers almost 5,000 works of modern art. Which, I’m not going to tell you all of the story because you want to figure this out, of how they came to buy it, where it goes, and what they did with the stipend that they were given. This is sort of the cutest little piece, where they live in a one-bedroom rent controlled apartment in New York and they have thousands of pieces of art in there. It makes you feel like sort of a piker to have, your measly picture of the velvet dog playing poker scene, but the idea is that they’ve got stuff underneath their bed, and you get to meet a lot of very famous artists, so it really is fun to watch. They’re a sweet couple and you’ll learn about either art, love or obsession. Four stars.
