Happy, Happy

JOY REVIEW

This is a really interesting movie, that’s subtitled, with four people who are very good actors. And one of the reasons you have the feeling that they’re really good actors is they all have bad teeth. The idea of the film is that a couple go up to the northern woods, I think this is in either Sweden or Denmark, it’s hard to tell, and rent a house from another couple who live on the same land. She is one of those peppy happy people and he is a bit recalcitrant, and they have a beautiful but nasty little boy. The other couple has an adopted child who is African, so the white child decides the black child should be a slave – so we instantly don’t like him. The couple that seem to be the perfect couple turn out to be much more troubled in the relationship: she’s had an affair and he’s trying to recover from it, and the “Happy Happy” couple haven’t had sex for a long time. So we do sort of a Bob and Carol, and Ted and Alice, where everybody does the switcheroo, not to really anybody’s satisfaction. This is all aided and abetted by a quartet of a guy singing basically American spirituals with background snow. So, I mean it’s a little offbeat but very enjoyable and very good acting. And you sort of have the sense that you really like all the people and wish them well. Three and a half stars.
