Girlfriend is an offbeat love story that is going to take a little getting used to because Evan, who is the protagonist, is a kid of a certain age with Down’s Syndrome. And although he’s well integrated into the community, and his mother is played by the wonderful Amanda Plummer, I’m not giving away much of the plot to say that as a plot device she has to kick the bucket early on for Evan to have access to a large amount of money because he has a crush on basically the town slut. But this is really a charming love story that takes twists and turns that are different than expected and looks at love and sex in a highly unusual, unsentimental and non-Hollywood way. It is terrific. Four stars.
