Girl in Progress

JOY REVIEW

Girl in Progress is kind of a lovely movie. You may have confused it with Girl Interrupted, which is the one that Angelina Jolie won an Oscar for as supporting actress a few years ago, which had to with young girls in mental institutions. This isn’t that story. This one stars Eva Mendez and Matthew Modine. The idea is Eva is a sexy hot mama who’s having an affair with married Matthew, whose daughter is kind of aware of it. I suppose the idea is that Emma is kind of the child to her daughter’s much more mature parent. And she is in a class with Patricia Arquette who talks about girls sort of becoming women and leaving their childhood behind, and the daughter decides that’s exactly what she’s going to do. So she makes up a list with her heavy-set but very wealthy and very charming best friend to leave her childhood behind, including losing her virginity and having a teacher believe in her and then disappointing her, and yada yada. So, this is actually a smart, charming movie and with good performances. It’s smart and it’s funny and it made a lot of sense. I’ll give it four stars.
