A movie spun out of equal parts folk tale, fable and real-life legend about the mysterious, 1930s Tennessee hermit who famously threw his own rollicking funeral party… while he was still alive.
“Get Low” stars Bill Murray and Robert Duval and Sissy Spacek. The story is a little hard to describe. Robert Duval plays a hermit that everybody dislikes and decides he wants to have his own funeral. And Bill Murray is kind of a sleazy mortuary owner who decides to accommodate him at any cost no matter what because he needs the money. And it’s not exactly that hilarity ensues, but interesting stuff ensues. You can see why this movie didn’t do very well, even with a great cast. It’s in search of a tone. And the great secret, that is the final reveal, just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But having said that, it’s wonderful to watch Duval and Bill Murray. Sissy Spacek doesn’t have much to do. I give it two and a half stars.
