Flying Swords of Dragon Gate

JOY REVIEW

It’s a 3D move from Hark Tsui starring Jet Li, whose face is the one that you will recognize the most, and it is terrifically balletic. And, let me be honest with you, the first half is nearly unintelligible. You’re trying to figure out the woman who’s escaping because she’s been impregnated by somebody in the court, and the concubine who has the lover who is treacherous, and Jet Li is wandering around the country kind of being a Chinese Zorro, and a woman who looks exactly like him who says she’s him, who seems to be waiting for him — very complicated plot, like 15,000 plot lines, but by the end it kind of all gets resolved, and the fight sequences are incredible. I was with probably the most thuggish audience I have ever been with at a screening, which says something, and even they got into it. So, it’s very bloody, it’s very confusing, but it’s really exciting and fun to watch. It’s kind of like an incredibly sophisticated video game. It’s a little over two hours, but still great fun. Four stars.
