Finding Bliss – Movie Review
A romantic comedy that explores the adult film industry through the eyes of an idealistic 25 year-old award winning film school grad
Finding Bliss has got a fairly good Hollywood pedigree. It’s got Leelee Sobieski, Kristen Johnston and Denise Richards. The story is about a young woman who’s an NYU film graduate. She wins an award for best film and goes off to Hollywood to make her way and of course ends up directing traffic and finally gets a an editing job for a movie company that turns out to be a porn company. She decides to take the job anyway because she doesn’t figure she can do her own screenplay. The problem about this movie is that it tries to be a feminist movie, but it ends up being a cheat. On the one hand it seems to be looking down its nose at pornography, all the while making fun of Leelee and her virginal and prim ways, all the while still having women naked throughout the film. It also cheats because the director of the porn films is a hotshot who obviously has a crush on her, and the story is that she’s working as a porn editor by day and a movie director on her own script at night. The only thing that I thought really worked in the whole movie was a scene where the porn actors decide that they want to be legitimatized, so they start acting during her play at night. They all fall asleep during their porn scenes during the day, and that is genuinely funny. But it only lasts for about 12 seconds and it’s too long a set up and too much follow up. I really had some problems with this movie, not because it wasn’t a good idea, but because it cheated. I give this one one star.
