Django Unchained is the latest from Quentin Tarantino starring Jamie Foxx as a freed slave, though Christoph Waltz is the one who really walks away with this movie. He plays a similar character to the one he played in Inglourious Basterds. He’s incredibly charming and you can’t tell if he’s good or evil, though in this one he’s primarily good. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a southern gentleman who owns slaves and isn’t very gentlemanly, and Kerry Washington looks pretty but doesn’t have much to do except scream and holler. This movie follows the Christmas tradition of being way too long, but is wildly entertaining. It’s incredibly violent, with the Tarantino mashup of violence and humor at the same time, but there’s something oddly compelling about it. The middle hour got a little squishy, as I suppose nearly all three hour movies do, but it really is a fun movie to watch and probably even says something about slavery and conscience while being charmingly entertaining. Four stars.
