Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Movie Review
Live-action adaptation of Jeff Kinney’s illustrated novel about a wise-cracking junior high school student.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is one of those movies that you have seen before. This one is about a cute, kind of clueless, middle schooler who decides he wants to be the most popular kid in the class and figures he has to lose his loser friends. And of course his loser friends become popular and he doesn’t. This is certainly a cute movie for kids and in fact when I saw it, the theater was full of screaming 11-year-olds whose parents had not taught them how to behave in public let alone in the movie theater — oh and I am sounding cranky. But the movie is fairly harmless. It is based on a very well known kids book and has some cartoon line drawings which are really kind of adorable. Nothing objectional, nothing very new. Some nice performances by some unknown kids. The only face that you will probably recognize is Steven Zahn who is such a sweet faced man that you instantly like him. He doesn’t have much to do in this movie. He plays the dad and there is a requisite Halloween scene. For originality I would probably give it zero. For charm for a certain age probably a four so it probably averages it out to, okay I will be nice, a three.
