Declaration of War
Declaration of War is a hard flick to actually review because, first of all, it’s written and directed and starred in by the same person, which usually is the kiss of death. Her name is Valerie Donzelli, and she stars with her apparently at one point boyfriend, Jeremie Elkaim. The story is two adorable people sort of fall in love with each other, have a baby, and it turns out the baby has major medical problems, and if this is sounding like a really downer movie to you, it’s really not. It avoids all the syrupy kinds of conventions that we’re used to seeing about sick babies, and it’s a terrific flick that really focuses on staying in the moment and apparently, among other things, it’s vaguely autobiographical. I give it four stars.
