Crazy Heart – Movie Review
Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician
In Crazy Heart, Jeff Bridges plays a country singer whose name is Bad. His real name we find out later in the movie, is Otis. The movie also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal who plays a small town reporter that interviews Bad and falls in love with him. Our boy Jeff – I assume he does some of his own singing. Also appearing are Robert Duvall for a moment and Colin Farrell has an uncredited cameo as a country singer and nearly steals the entire movie. It’s a really wonderful performance by Jeff Bridges and he’s actually being talked about as a potential Oscar nominee. But the movie itself is not so good and I’ll tell you why not. It is written and directed by the same person, and we know that very few people can pull that off. The story’s great, but it should have been edited. It just goes too slowly at some points and it’s a shame because the performances are uniformly terrific, but the movie just drags. So, Jeff gets five stars in terms of his performance. Colin Farrell five stars as well. Robert Duvall always. But the movie itself is really a two, so I’ll give the whole thing a three. But the real reason to see it is Jeff. You’ll be bored with the movie, I’m afraid. Sorry.
