Chasing Mavericks

JOY REVIEW

I saw Chasing Mavericks the same day I saw Chasing Ice, which is also about water, but this water is defrosted.  This is based on a true story about a young man who was saved from drowning, and was always fascinated by waves.  His surfer dude next-door neighbor, played by the terrific Gerard Butler, takes him under his wing as he doesn’t have a father and his mom, played by Elizabeth Shue, is an absentee drunk.  He decides he wants to surf the Mavericks, which are apparently waves that come out of El Nino and are 40-50 feet high.  The surfing footage is just amazing!  We’ve seen surfing movies before, but the reason to see this movie is a combination of the terrific footage and Gerard Butler, who even tried to do some of his own stunts and apparently hurt himself.  You get the sense that this isn’t going to end well, and I’m not going to tell you if it does or doesn’t, you’ll just have to see for yourself.  Three and a half stars
