Casa Valentina, is based on a real situation, it is written by Harvey Fierstein, who of course has done all sorts of plays about gay men, but this is, at its heart is about transvestites, and most transvestites are not gay. It has a fairly impressive cast including Reed Birney and John Cullum and Mare Winningham. The story is set in the Catskills in 1962 and based on a situation where men would get together in this isolated and secluded, private paradise and be able to dress like women. The issue of tranvestitism has been taken up by other plays, so there is nothing shocking here. The story follows a young man and his frist trip up there and meeting all the regulars. The acting is uniformly good, the issue is important, but the story is less about gay men and more about secrets. 3.5 stars
