Cars 2 is truth in advertising. I didn’t like Cars 1 and I only liked Cars 2 slightly better because at least there was a plot here. Anthropomorphic cars don’t work for me, what can I tell you? I mean I think cars already have a personality and having talking hunks of metal that aren’t robots– I don’t know. I didn’t like the first one, even with Paul Newman. Two at least has some interesting things in it. It’s sort of a James Bond kind of satire I guess, except the cars are James Bond. I don’t know, I don’t really get it. It’s too noisy, it’s too complicated for kids, and it’s too long (it’s an hour and 47 minutes long but it seems longer). The good news is the animation is terrific. And the way they can make cars have expressions, just goes to show how brilliant Pixar really is, but this has no heart to it. I know Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy are supposed to be best friends and the conflict of the difference between somebody who’s becoming a star and leaving his buddy behind is just boring. Seen it before, don’t care. In a nutshell, this is too scary for kids, too noisy for kids, and too long for adults. The sort of Bond satire they are going for, kids are not going to get or care about. Two stars.
