Flamboyant Austrian fashionista Brüno takes his show to America.
Bruno is the latest offering from Sacha Baron Cohen. I think he is a brilliant satirist. I think he’s probably got the best ear and eye for poking fun at social foibles since Jonathan Swift or Tom Lehrer . On the other hand, this is one of the crudest, rudest, most unpleasant movies you’ll ever see. If you thought the original Borat was silly and stupid, this one is worse. The problem about this one is in the first Borat you weren’t sure if the people were in on the joke or not, that they knew that they were being had. This one, since it’s impossible that they didn’t know that they were being had, so it takes away part of the fun and adds a degree of nastiness that wasn’t really present in the first one. So, as a satirist he gets a five. As a movie, he gets a two. Everybody will go see it. But unless you really like looking at his private parts, this is a movie that probably could be skipped, except for the water cooler content. Two stars.
