Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best

JOY REVIEW

Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best is an offbeat movie with a terrible title that is just charming. It’s written, directed, and stars Ryan O’Nan, who plays kind of a depressed younger brother who dressed up in a moose suit because he wants to be a rock star — he’s an aspiring singer, and he keeps getting thrown out of bands and thrown out of situations. I’m not going to tell you too much about it, because some of the stuff is just downright silly fun, and he teams up with another guy who’s just as much of a lunatic as he is, and they decide that they want to do a cross-country tour of their band. The music here is adorable. I’m not going to tell you why because it’s part of the fun of the movie. Melissa Leo is also in it, Andrew McCarthy, Christopher McDonald, Jason Ritter, and Wilmer Valderrama, so he’s got a real sort of star-studded cast, but the real stars are Ryan O’Nan, Michael Weston, and Arielle Kebbel, who is a young woman that hooks up with them. This is fresh, it’s funny, it’s well done, and with a great deal of heart and a great deal of sense. Four and a half stars.
