Brighton Rock

JOY REVIEW

Brighton Rock is a kind of classic British film noir with John Hurt and Helen Mirren in supporting but pivotal parts.  It’s beautifully photographed; I mean extraordinarily, and a little hard to understand because everybody’s got a serious accent, but the idea is that there are some gangsters who are rubbing each other out.  I think it’s really The Godfather British style, but it’s got some amazing twists and one of the protagonists who’s really a murderer, so we’re not sure that we like him a lot, looks like a combination of Cary Grant and Leo DiCaprio.  And, turns out that he has to seduce a young waitress who is instrumental in being able to finger him as the murderer and what happens to the two of them.  It’s really a lovely movie.  Four and a half stars.
