Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde has more than 20 members in the cast and an orchestra as well. It’s a musical based on the story of Bonnie and Clyde, who actually died young in a shoot out with the feds after robbing banks during the Depression. It stars Laura Osnes, who apparently was part of a reality show and won the role of Sandy in Grease. I think she is certainly competent and pretty, but not an ounce of charisma, which is what I’ve felt every time I’ve seen her on stage. It also stars Jeremy Jordan, who was also in West Side Story. I don’t know what the problem about it is, but it doesn’t quite work. Maybe musicals that start on the opening scene with dead bodies riddled with bullets is a little hard to get by, but then there are other musicals that have to do with equally difficult topics. Whatever the reason, it really didn’t work. There are two good songs and all the rest sound exactly the same. The set is spare, the plot thin, and the lyrics are completely unmemorable. They met when they were 19 and 20 and died, I think, 14 years later; I guess when they were in their early 30s. I don’t know why this doesn’t work, but it really doesn’t. Two stars.
