The film centers on a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods
Blue Valentine is a story that we’ve seen many times before including the Oscar nominated Revolutionary Road where love goes terribly wrong over time. What elevates this story is the cast, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. We see in nearly stream of consciousness flashback how the seeds of their destruction was there all along. The level of their acting means you really believe them. But we have seen all this before of two people who are crazy about each other and over time, their marriage just deteriorates, becomes crazy, and it’s certainly painful to watch a marriage deteriorate and wonder whether or not marriage really is made for human beings or not. I would give it three and a half stars. It’s difficult to watch, but it is a well-acted, well-written movie that has a certain amount of cheer to it, it’s just not very cheerful.
