This is a story of a man in free fall. On the road to redemption, darkness lights his way. Connected with the afterlife, Uxbal is a tragic hero and father of two who’s sensing the danger of death. He struggles with a tainted reality and a fate that works against him in order to forgive, for love, and forever.
Biutiful stars Javier Bardem, and to be quite honest with you, I really didn’t like the story particularly. Badrem, who plays Uxbal, has two kids and an ex-wife and he’s not really a particularly nice human being. And we find out that — we sort of suspect, but we find out fairly early on that he’s actually dying. And what kind of legacy he’s going to leave his kids. But as I said, I didn’t particularly like it, but I thought that Javier Barden was terrific in it. So it’s not a likeable movie, but he will very likely be nominated for something just because he’s just plain wonderful in it. So it’s really worth seeing on that basis. So I would give the movie probably no more than a star and a half, but I’d give him four stars, so you can figure that from there.
