Big Miracle is one of those movies that sounded too overly sweet when I was hearing about it, and I didn’t really want to go to. But being the intrepid critic that I am, I thought okay if you’re going to report on movies you have to go to see movies, even ones you don’t think you’re going to like. And you know what, it’s really terrific. It stars Drew Barrymore as an Alaskan Green Peace member, John Krasinski as her ex-boyfriend who is a reporter that’s been sent to Barrow, Alaska, Kristen Bell as an up and coming Barbie doll reporter, Dermot Mulroney as the head of the National Guard, Tim Blake Nelson as kind of a scientist (he’s always great), and also Ted Danson as the kind of evil guy who is trying to do a pipeline. Cathy Baker has a brief cameo as Ted Danson’s wife, so it’s a terrific cast. The story is that there are three whales that are caught in the ice because the baby whale is not very well, and if they can’t get them out they’re going to die. This is based on a true story that was a big deal in the 80’s when Reagan was president and how the politics enter into this, including a thaw in the Cold War and you get Inuit natives, oil companies, Russian and American military — the whole thing is a little bit far fetched, but true with news reel footage. I thought it was a terrific movie. Four stars.
