Bernie is the story of an assistant mortician who is everybody’s favorite human being, just charming and adorable, a little bit slow but not that slow, who finds favor with the town’s angry rich widow who is played by a very cantankerous Shirley MacLaine, who is really wonderful in this. Jack Black plays Bernie and the townspeople play the townspeople. The story seems a little thin, and then at the very end you learn that this is actually based on a true story. The acting is good in this. Who knew Jack Black could sing, and the townspeople are really a revelation. It’s a really fun movie. Four stars.
