Barney’s Version

SYNOPSIS

The picaresque and touching story of the politically incorrect, fully lived life of the impulsive, irascible and fearlessly blunt Barney Panofsky.

JOY’S REVIEW

“Barney’s Version” is the story of Barney Panofsky who is played by Paul Giamatti. Barney is kind of an ordinary guy who has kind of a gutsy life. His father is played by Dustin Hoffman and his love interest by Rosamund Pike. His second wife is played by Minnie Driver. One of his friends is played by Scott Speedman and Bruce Greenwood is in it as well.   So it’s got a great cast. The story is of Barney, a Jewish man who lives in Montreal,  who gets himself in extraordinary circumstances because he just absolutely will not give up.  For some reason women fall in love with him even though he’s not at all gorgeous and is kind of a loser type.  Dustin Hoffman is brilliant in this.  The problem is Paul Giamatti. He’s a wonderful actor but he’s not the least bit charismatic.  The story may intrigue you though . I’ll give it 2 and a half stars.
