Bad Words is a kind of a charming directorial debut of Jason Bateman who is the star of this movie. Without giving away the movie basically, Kathryn Hahn plays a somewhat disreputable but not very well drawn newspaper reporter, and Jason starts in voiceovers saying that he doesn’t necessarily make good decisions, but he has decided to compete in the National Spelling Bee, for reasons that don’t become clear, but you can guess fairly quickly. The idea being that “Bad Words” is kind of a pun, in that the words are the ones that the kids spell, and the difficult ones are the one that are given to Jason because he is 40 years old, and also he speaks in less than dulcet tones with the kids and everybody else. There is no doubt that he has spent 25 years being a charming actor, but this one could have used a little more of a plot, story line, character development…something. It is entertaining; the kid from Homeland is wonderful. This is story about friendship and redemption, but it could have been better with a little more work put into it. 3 stars.
