Attack the Block
Attack the Block is not particularly attractive in its description. It’s a bunch of thugs in London who attack a young woman, and then are attacked by aliens from outer space. Okay, you’re already turned off. Don’t get turned off of this movie, it’s actually very good! It’s well acted by a bunch of unknowns and you actually care about it. It’s got excitement, smarts, and a protagonist named Moses who’s the head thug and at one point says, “first they sent drugs into the ghetto, then they sent guns, and we weren’t killing each other fast enough so now they send monsters!” It’s probably the army who breeds them, so this is a smart movie. And you’re going to sit there for the first couple of minutes saying, “what is she talking about? This is the stupidest movie; I’m tired of aliens from outer space, who needs it?” You need it. It’s a terrific movie. It’s strong on metaphor, it’s strong on acting, it’s strong on suspense, and it’s strong on excitement. Four and a half stars, believe it or not. Believe it.
