At Any Price stars Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron, and I love Dennis Quaid, and Zac Efron is cute. Dennis Quaid plays a farmer who’s had the family farm in Iowa for four years, has two sons – one of whom went to Iowa state and has now disappeared and clearly was his favorite son, and Zac is the younger one who is staying around and doesn’t want anything to do with the farm and not much to do with his dad, and just wants to be a race care driver. We know Dennis isn’t quite the good old boy we think he is because he’s having an affair with Heather Graham when he has a perfectly lovely wife who says “I love you and everyday you make me feel stupid for doing it,” which is a chilling statement. It turns out Dennis is also cleaning seeds, which is the process that farmers used to use of taking a seed and cleaning it and re-using it, but with genetically modified seeds that the companies make you not do that so they can sell more seeds, and it turns out he’s been doing that and now being investigated. This is kind of a rich story, and then it goes kind of wrong about three quarters in and I don’t want to give away too much of a plot, but there’s an unnecessarily violent episode that sort of makes you believe that the way for a family to stay together is to share a horrible secret or crime together, so I don’t know exactly what this movie was about eventually. I think they could have had a very good movie without doing that, but they chose that path, so I give it two and a half stars.
