Arthur Christmas takes a completely different look at Santa Claus, with the title being passed down through 16 generations, Santa being more of a figurehead, and his son has taken over. Jim Broadbent is Santa Claus, Hugh Laurie is his elder son, and the adorable Arthur is the adorable James McAvoy. The idea is that Christmas is really run like a battlefield operation, complete with ninja elves, and instead of the sleigh and reindeer, we have something that’s nearly invisible and looks like a spaceship. It’s cleverly written, very smart, and really a delight. It didn’t do too well against the Muppets, but I think it will have legs and it’s something that both kids and adults can get behind. I think this will become a Christmas classic, I thought it was terrific. Four stars.
