Antichrist – Movie Review
A grieving couple retreats to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse.
Antichrist is a new movie by Lars Van Trier who also did Our Town with Nicole Kidman. So, we already know that he has sort of an off-beat perception of the world. This has got Willem Dafoe, who plays a therapist and Charlotte Gainsborough, who plays his wife. It is one of the sexier movies you will ever see including full frontal nudity, it is also one of the most violent movies. It is done almost exclusively in the dark. Not only dark in content, but dark in terms of how dark the scenes are. The story is basically of a husband and wife who are having sex during the time that their very young child essentially walks out a window and dies. The mother is understandably depressed. He is her therapist who decides to cure her. What follows is a combination of misery with Kathy Bates and James Caan and Heronymous Bosch and I don’t know what else it is. It is thought provoking but takes too long to get there. These are wonderful performers with beautiful cheek bones and great bodies and there is something here, but it gets all confused about the evil that women are and Satan. It is certainly not a pleasant movie, and I don’t think anybody is going to see it. I’m going to give it two stars because it is different and unusual, but unpleasant. I don’t think anybody is going to see it but me.
