Amigo is a film by John Sayles, and is basically talking about a small village in the Philippines that gets caught in the war with America. I’m sure it’s heartfelt, but it is so long and so complicated, with most of it subtitled, that it becomes nearly incomprehensible to figure out what’s going on. The idea is the headman has a son who’s gone off to join his brother fighting in the hills, and the American army comes and basically occupies the town, and it’s all just very complicated. I think with some editing — some judicious editing — this could have been a really interesting movie. As it is, it’s too long and too complicated and you just can’t follow it. One and a half stars.
