Altar Boyz – Theater Review
Altar Boyz is an Off-Broadway musical comedy about a fictitious Christian boy band from Ohio. It addresses and satirizes, among other things, the phenomenon of boy bands, the popularity of Christian-themed music and products in contemporary American culture.
Pick of the Week!
Altar Boyz is actually one of my favorite off-Broadway experiences. I saw it on opening night five years ago. I have the album. And I have a friend who had never seen it and since it’s about to close sometime in January I decided that I should go see it again. Well, it was just as much fun as it was the first time. It’s been around for five years and to a certain degree, the country was in different shape five years ago. So it has a slightly darker undertone to it then it did then. Then it was kind of shockingly irreverent. Now it’s kind of shockingly prescient of people putting religion in places that it may or may not be appropriate. But it’s really still a fun experience even with a completely different cast. Four stars.
