9-5 – Theater Review

9-5, the new Broadway musical based on the ever so entertaining, Dolly Parton 80’s flick.

9:00 to 5:00 is a musical based on the movie that starred Jane Fonda, Lilly Tomlin, and Dolly Parton. I think what they’re trying to do in the casting is to make sure that the people in the cast, like the people who were in the movie, which succeeds to a certain extent. Megan Hilty certainly looks like a Dolly Parton look-a-like. I guess Stephanie Block looks more or less like Jane Fonda. There is certainly some resemblance between Lilly Tomlin and Allison Janney. Allison Janney is a wonderful actress and certainly has a huge amount of charisma. The problem is she can’t sing and she can’t dance. Since this a musical that is somewhat of a limitation. On the other hand, this will make a lot of money and the dancing sequences are wonderful and the set itself is terrific. It just could have been better when you realize how many talented actors in the New York area who can do all three, sing, act, and dance. Not to take anything away from Allison. This is basically theater for the tourist, and the tourist will love it, and it will make a lot of money, and who am I to complain? I am not anybody to complain, and I think it’s just lovely that everybody is having a good time. About three stars.
