That Evening Sun – Movie Review
Abner Meecham, an aging Tennessee farmer discarded to a nursing facility by his lawyer son, flees the old folks’ home and catches a ride back to his country farm to live out his days in peace….
THAT EVENING SUN is not a bad movie, but not a pleasant movie either. The main reason to see it is Hal Halbrook who has aged in to a charming man who can literally arch an eyebrow to tell you everything you need to know. He plays a widower who escapes a nursing home, how often we’ve seen that, and goes back to his old homestead that is currently being rented by a young man that he hates with his wife and daughter. The interplay between Lorenzo and Hal as they both try and regain their place in the world and do their alpha male routine where neither of them are alpha males is somewhat touching but takes an awful long time to get to. You really hope for a happier ending than you get. The ending is a bit ambiguous here. There is some unpleasantry on the way. Two stars.
