321… Frankie Go Boom

JOY REVIEW

321… Frankie Go Boom is a really odd movie, but there are some endearing performances in it.  It opens with a home movie of an older brother sort of torturing his younger brother in a hilarious way.  The two brothers are in their backyard in swim trunks, and you see the older brother call out to the younger brother to come over to an area of the lawn that’s covered by a table clothe, and it turns out it’s covering a huge pit in the ground.  The younger brother falls into the pit and then the mother tumbles in as well, bare breasted.  This opening scene, to a certain extent, gives you everything you need to know about the movie.  It’s crude, it’s rude, and it’s hilarious!  It also has a couple of well-known people in cameos that are completely different from their usual images.  One is Chris Noth, who is almost unrecognizable that you’ll think to yourself, ‘that’s a familiar face, who could that possibly be?’  You also have the same phenomenon with Ron Perlman, although that one was a little easier for me.  You also have the wonderful Chris O’ Dowd, who I think steals the movie out from underneath everybody.  The plot is that the brothers are reunited at the mom’s insistence, played by Nora Dunn, with the idea being that the older brother is now out of rehab and everything is going to be okay, and that the younger brother should come and forgive him because everything has changed, which we know is not the case.  But this is a hilarious movie, that is a little uneven, to be quite honest, but if you don’t mind the nudity and the crudity, you’re going to have a great time.  If you do mind it, don’t even bother going. All in all, I give it 3 ½ stars.
