When did angry become the new civil? When did accuracy become a thing of the past. Who cares? Just say it right? Wrong! If you say it with enough vehemence people will believe it. There was a study where one group of facts was stated as a positive and one was a negative. For example “We now understand the earth is flat” and “you’d have to be a complete idiot to think the earth is round.” Guess which statement people believed? Duh, the negative version of the statement. The idea is that if you are positive about something, then you are just an cock-eyed optimist and too stupid to understand that the real truth is something else. And I don’t understand where as a country we began thinking this way. If you say something like “well I think tomorrow will be better than today” What are you stupid?? But if you say “the world is going to hell in a hand basket” “Wow, right you are so right!” What? NO! When did that happen to us?

I can remember about 10 years ago saying that we have become a nation of crybabies and busybodies. As a psychologist, I am incredibly aware of that, because what I do is have people focus on their issues and what “they” can do about it. We don’t blame others because if nothing else, when you do that, you’ve just given away your power. You never want to give away your power; you never want to be powerless! Why would you want to do that? And you do it because it feels good. “Ohhh he broke up with me” “This person ruined my life” “Those people don’t care about me”. Oh I ‘m sorry, you need a hug? That may work for the short term but you are a victim. If you came from a dysfunctional family and believe your life is ruined, guess what, it’s gonna happen. But if you believe that your family did the best they could with what they had at the time and now its up to you to emphasize what they did right, then you got a shot at making yourself happy. So when you have the choice of sitting out or dancing… Dance!
